London Fashion Week: Runway to Window

Share

If you know me, you know I am a “details” person. My design signature has always been unique couture soft furnishings.  With a fashion background, I have always gravitated to the runway for inspiration. So when I saw what walked the runway at London Fashion Week, I couldn’t help myself from dream designing . These looks are tailor- made to go straight from Runway to Window. Or did these designers get their inspiration from interiors?

First up- Grommets. This season’s darling detail was taken to a whole new level by Teatum Jones. XXL grommets define edges, lace up skirts and sleeves and build structure.

Ok, so the laced grommets would be perfect between panel widths or laced down a leading edge. But the red dress on the right is awesome! The threaded sash through the grommets is just the half of it. The front folding is a horn/cascade that says modern sculpture on the window.

Loving the clear vinyl overlay with grommeted hem.

Here, the sash is more suspender or tab top….

Next up- Cording.  Cord and Lace sculptures at Burberry and Theo VII were a hit at London Fashion Week. Critics said this about Theo VII’s collection. “Subverting the ordinary, Theo VII’s collection was inspired by individuality, adventure and spirituality.” We saw this coming. We’ve been on the personalization, true customization and individuality design bandwagon for the last year.  This intricate cord dress is just aching to be a window fashion.

Check out the skirt, It’s a not- quite- what- it -seems sweater knit bodice cum mini skirt.

The Burberry corded cape translates into this knotted bead curtain by Hella Jongerius at the United Nations.

Lace, as seen here, was a strong decorative feature. My favorite is this wrap trench dress by Mulberry. So many details not enough windows…

Fringe was seen time and time again across the London catwalks, with House Of Holland showing off the trend particularly well. Who knew that 6″ chainette could look so good. ( BTW, all this use of swinging trimmings signal the Art Deco influence gaining steam in interiors. More on that later.) Don’t forget the lace treatment on this dress.

Tasseled belts, fringed shoulder pads and necklaces. I am thinking about fringed “horsetails” on oversized rings and rods.

Last, but not least- Ribbons.  At London Fashion Week,  Ribbons are on target whether they’re another take on an over cage at Huishan Zhang – again, think sculptural structure;  lacings or as stitched ornamentation seen at Erdem. Applying a mix of lace, satin, tapestry and velvet ribbons in a mashup of sizes and colors is a drapery no-brainer.

Oh, and spotted at Paris Deco Off- Kriska Decor curtains. fashioned from what looks like overscaled hooks and eyes…. I can’t help myself.
