Milan Design Week in Review

Share

The design world descended on Milan this week for the 50th anniversary of the Salone del Mobile; we have been inspired by  the latest advancements and introductions for furniture, products, architecture and more. Here’s some of our favorites:

Chroma by Kinnasand

We previewed Kinnasand’s Reset Collection in Paris in January and loved it. Chroma is a modern, innovative take on the luxury fiber- silk. It is a combination of silk, metal and cotton combined with special washing and finishing, that moves forward the evolution of a modern classical fabric.

Amalfi by Kinnasand

This original woven seersucker, inspired by the fashion, says Nantucket summer to me. Its structured stripes are a result of the different tensions exerted on the warp yarns during the weaving procedure.

Salut by Kinnasand

Last but not least, Salute is just that -a homage to the best selling and innovative patterns from their archives. They have been combined into a new fabric by sewing different textures and opacities togerhter patchwork style. To see more of what Kinnasand showed in Milan click HERE

Jennifer Castoldi of Trendease spotted these hot tidbits:
– OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) are the next breakthrough in lighting

– ‘Relaxed Fit’ is what I like to call the new seating direction. Sofas and chairs are loosely upholstered and have an informal feel to them.

– Body parts are a big inspiration to the new talent on the scene.

Speaking of young designers, one I follow -Sebastian Herkner, Designpreis Deutschland Newcomer for 2011- showed at  Salone Satellite and for DeVorm.

Clip Chair has been designed  without wasting any material during the production process. The result is a classic, detail-oriented and solid chair made of selected, high-quality ash. The idea behind the ‘Clip’ is the colouring of the attachment between the back and the legs of the chair, whereas the colour stands in direct contrast to the wooden elements. The charm and the beauty of the Clip lies hidden in its functional simplicity.

The Dutch never disappoint. Here’s more Dutch design:
