Lace is back.

As supported by the design studios like Indigo, lace is a popular design direction for the next couple of years. But this isn’t Grandma’s lace doilies; look for lace rendered in fresh ways, unusual materials and in unique color and pattern combinations. Today’s lace is too fashion forward and created in many too forms and materiasl to be old fashioned. We love the dichotomy of lace- its charming innocence paired with mystery concealing as much as it reveals. Lace is can be sexy and sweet at the same time. It all adds up to an intriguing medium for interiors.

Another reason we love lace- the romantic softening of interiors as we move post recession. Lace adds personality because with visual and tactile layering.

Metallic lace is one thing, but lace made of entwined human hair? It may sound revolting, but in fact, it is quite beautiful! Kerry Howley took inspiration from the wallpaper patterns she discovered at the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture and turned up the Victorian artwork a notch. Attraction/Aversion is Kerry’s award winning graduate collection.

Just in time for holiday gift giving a flurry of design books have been released ; offering creatives and clients inspiration. Here are the top ten ( in no particular order) on my wish list:

1.

Live, Love and Decorateby Martyn Lawrence Bullard

With the release timed with the launch of Bullard’s fabric collection for Schumacher and his design center speaking tour, get a copy and have it signed as a gift for a fellow design pro. The book shows off the author’s mastery of the dramatic and balance between contemporary and traditional.

2.

Celia Birtwell

Considered one of the most influential textile designer of this generation, muse to David Hicks and friend of the Beatles, Jagger and Picasso this book , British print designer, Celia Birtwell, is celebrated in this new publication. Her beautiful hand painted prints have appeared on apparel for former husband, Ossie Clark, as well as on new collections for Topshop and John Lewis. This book is a wonderful addition to any surface designer’s bookshelf.

3.

The Impossible Collection of Fashion by Valerie Steele. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!

From Poiret to Pucci, Doucet to Dior, Vionnet to Valentino, Valerie Steele, chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT), selects the one hundred most iconic dresses of the twentieth century. This magnificent collection, while certainly subjective, is sure to receive gasps of pleasure as well as of surprise. Steele’s selection, hand-picked for this luxury volume presented in a linen clamshell case with a cutout metal plate, astounds in every regard.

4.

Diana Vreeland: The Eye has to Travel

Having always admired the legendary “High Priestess of Fashion,” Diana Vreeland’s impact on fashion and style was legendary. I am looking forward to getting a peek inside her rich life. With more than 350 illustrations, including original magazine spreads and many famous photographs, this intensely visual book shows fashion as it was being invented, and how Vreeland shaped American taste through her superb vision.

5.

For my Francophile fix- In The New French Interior by Penny Drue Baird, authority on all things French, moves beyond the traditional historic styles to explore the design elements that make up the fresh, clean look. To illustrate the style, Baird draws on ten of her own recent projects, apartment and house installations, and presents French precedents and influences through specially commissioned photography of Parisian interiors.

6.

My Midwestern roots draw me to Chicago Spaces published by Chicago Home and Garden and hopes to vanquish the notion that we only design conservatively. The book showcases spaces that the editors loved or spoke to them representing a broad range of styles.

7.

Sister Parish, American Style by Martin Wood revisits her sumptuous and quirky interiors. Her trompe l’oeil sawgs and cascades come to mind.

8.

Katie Ridder: Rooms by Heather MacIssac is the designer’s first book showcasing her eclectic cool interiors.

The New Bespokeby Frank Roop lets the reader into his head as he works through the entire creative process- from inspiration to installation.

Influential design blogger Grace Bonney penned Design*Sponge at Home, the ultimate design manual for her fans. This says it best- “ Thank you,” wrote a reader to Design*Sponge creator Grace Bonney, “for teaching me that houses don’t have to be frumpy and formal. They don’t have to be matchy-matchy or rigidly modern.”

OK… 2 more I can’t seem to do without…

Let me introduce Eun il lee, master Korean textile designer and partner in Artvivant Textiles. Lee is a hidden gem in the textile world; creating inspirational and unique textiles for Coulisse and Nobilis along with his own firm. Both collections contain stunning textiles with a focus on window coverings as their end use.

We recently caught up with Lee and his partner Terry Bayless to discuss his collections and the process. The textiles are produced in the Philippines to take advantage of the natural fibers Asia has to offer; it’s a varied range of materials – beads, leather, silk, branches, raffia. Eun il lee’s textiles strike a balance between ancient and modern fibers combined with century old Korean looming techniques. The list is long and I am always inspired by it.

Nil’s style philosophy comes from the ying and yang. This can be the connection between God and man, God and nature, or man and nature. Yin Yang is also present at more personal level- relationships between man and his or her history, home, parents and friends. Nil weaves these relationships into his fabrics.

Nil explains, “I have a certain feeling with each material. My perception of silk, for example, is the womanly. The combination of hard fibers like abacas and pineapple and soft materials such as silk is exactly the philosophy of Yin and Yang. When you put them together they fight and harmonize to create a new personality.”

Nil sees his loom as the tool for his creations- the fabrics are his painter’s canvas or the music’s notes. He says it best: “The fabrics are my poems, my songs, my paintings.” The handloom used to create his emotional textiles, was devised about 2,000 years ago and was brought to England by the Romans. The process consists of interlacing one set of threads of yarn (the warp) with another (the weft). The warp threads are stretched lengthwise in the weaving loom. The weft cross-threads, are woven into the warp to make the cloths.

Innovative materials are often incorporated into the designs, via traditional back-strap weaving. Artvivant focuses on blending natural fibers in such a way to produce a quality level similar to modern man made fabrics, for example the piña silk or pineapple thread which is the base material for many of the designs, is traditionally used for rope making.

The incorporation of bamboo, sticks and buri reeds provide horizontal strength and stability, which eliminate the need for cross bars in roman blinds, and make for elegant panel glides, room dividers, or roman blinds.

While in Paris last week visiting Le Manach, our wonderful host mentioned that we should make a point of seeing the Interieurs 2011 showhouse held just off the Champs Elysse at Hôtel Dassault This is the second edition of the showcase organized by Architectural Digest( FR) and Artcurial and this year’s theme - The art of living with art-certainly lives up to its press.

Twelve top French interior designers were invited to illustrate his/her relationship to art, from collaborations with artists to art-inspired sets to the staging of collections. The goal of the producers was to show today’s diversity in interior design and the decorative arts and to reveal future design trends. This was a not- to- be missed event and we were so excited to be able to see it.

The cherry on top was lunch at Café Artcurial after viewing the exhibit, as I got to check the Café off my list to eat at in Paris. ( Basically, I wanted to see the restaurant’s interiors designed by Gilles et Boissier.)

The rooms and designers:

The Japanese Office by François-Joseph Graf

The Caesar Salon by Alain Demachy

The Mark Rothko Styled Bedroom by India Mahdavi

The Living-room in Optical Illusion by Olivia Putman

The Dream-like Library and Bedroom by Roxane Rodriguez

The Sculptural Dining-room by Chahan Minassian

The Private Art Gallery by Jean-Louis Deniot

The “other” Kitchen by Tristan Auer

The Porcelain Office-Dining-room by Laurent Buttazzoni & Associés

The Cocoon to contemplate a video by Pierre Yovanovitch

The Three-dimensional Living Room by Thierry Lemaire

Interieurs 2011 – Artcurial by aucoindumondedeco

French showhouses are conceptual as U.S. showhouses are literal. You have to walk through the rooms with an open mind and read between the lines of what the designer was trying to express. My favorites were:

The room as Mark Rothko to India Mahdavi

The project. The designer uses the palette of painter Mark Rothko in a patchwork of squares of velvet wool, cotton and silk that lines the walls and extends into curtains. The multicolored geometric print carpet with animal skin contrasts the walls.

The decorator. An architect trained in Fine Arts and then at Christian Liaigre, India Mahdavi founded her agency in 1999. She has been exploring different areas ranging from design to interior design, through set design, and master the art of the bold stylistic juxtapositions

The most outrageous and fabulous!

The Sculptural Dining-room by Chahan Minassian

The project. The decorator showcased the Belgian artist Arne Quinze, famous for upcycled wooden buildings. A sculpture of wooden beams juxtaposed against gilded and paneled walls that is reflected on a mirrored floor.

The decorator. Chahan Minassian excels in art since 1993 atmospheric sets, mixing subtle shades, textures and game style agreementsFor this Parisian-Armenian, furniture, fabrics, ceramics and works of art are part of the same story.

The “other” Kitchen by Tristan Auer

The room is an architecturial synthesis inspired by the artistic currents of the 20th century such as surrealiasm, arte povera, minimalism and artists that embody these movements like Rene Margitte The “HABITATION CELL” combines all the functions of the kitchen into a mirrored brass monolith and explores light and space as if in a darkroom with an image projected onto a sensitizied surface.

The Three-dimensional Living Room by Thierry Lemaire

The project. Parquet Versailles goes from floor to on the walls. A piece of aluminum sculpture by artist Christophe Raynal, is a kind of metal springs of a chair. Her simple furniture – sofa taupe, buffet and coffee table composed of three modules lacquered white, turquoise and beige – play it down and remember that it is in a salon.

The decorator. Elegance and simplicity define the style of Thierry Lemaire. This Parisian architect made a debut in the building before going in the decoration of private projects, and appreciates the authentic raw materials he works with modernity.

The Private Art Gallery by Jean-Louis Deniot

The project. The hallway, staircase and gallery suggest the atmosphere of a collector. Jean-Louis Deniot reinterprets, combines and stylizes in neutral tones patterns borrowed from the paintings of Bernard Frize, Sol LeWitt and Peter Zimmermann for murals, printed carpets and wall fabrics as wispy graphics.

The decorator. Deniot is second to none since 2000 to relax the French classicism. At his best in the total look, this thirty graduate of the Ecole Camondo prefer the mix of styles in muted silky shades.

The Porcelain Office-Dining-room by Laurent Buttazzoni & Associés

The project. The cubicles of BSM office furniture welcome a collection of china – pieces by contemporary artists like Klara Kristalova, as well as chinoiserie of the eighteenth century. In the center of the room, a flesh pink banquet table drawn close, the seats high time. Curtains and portieres in buttercup provide the key to the pop scene.

The Decorators. Colorists Fins, Laurent and Frederic Lavaud Buttazzoni boost their rigorous architectures shots by keeping solids alive. The pair met on the banks of ESAG Penninghen before collaborating with Andree Putman, and in 1995 founded their agency, known for its retro-modern achievements.

Diamond and Barratta don’t disappoint with a ribbon and flora chintz recolored into two looks- a blue and white toile and Chocolate grounded floral with a decidedly English feel. Best part of the chocolate colorway is the blown up mural as a backdrop.

Swiss textile manufacturer Création Baumann recently presented its new Halina and Halina Stripe curtain fabric – an airy textile with an African touch from the new Living Line collection ‘Inspired’- at imm Cologne. Carneige Textile was showing the fabric at Neocon and it won gold award in textile category.

Halina is a finely striped weave with the color woven in a heavier yarn. In order to achieve a 3D effect, the finely striped weave is vertically pleated and horizontally embossed. Halina Stripe is a broad stripe of contrasting colors reminiscent of woven raffia. The design picks up on current fashion trends and adds an up-to-the-minute touch to any interior.

Celebrating it’s 30th anniversary, Carnegie added two new patterns to the Xorel brand of multitasking textiles. Xorel Pixie & Cascade Appliqué explore the blending of a modern innovative material (Xorel) with traditional textile craft process. Xorel, a high performance solution textile is embellished by appliquéing decorative design motifs in secondary layer of Xorel.

DesignTex

Through a licensing program, the Museum of New Mexico Foundation invites manufacturers to reap decorative harvests from its four museums, six monuments, and single archaeological-studies office. The roster of partners hits 18 with the debut of the Shelter collection from Designtex. After vice president of design Kimberle Frost connected with the foundation’s director of licensing, Pamela Kelly, a yearlong series of product-development trips to Santa Fe commenced. Frost huddled with two curators—the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture’s Valerie Verzuh and the Museum of International Folk Art’s Bobbie Sumberg—and mined their vast collections as sources for 11 upholstery patterns.

Wolf Gordon

Wolf Gordonhas turned out innovative and amazing wall coverings for forty years. Not one to rest on their laurels, the natural progression is toward textiles Fabrics by Vescom, named for the mill that’s manufacturing the line, includes 19 polyester drapery fabrics. Burano is one of the bold solids. In pattern territory, recurring geometrics read organic in Minu. Beadlike lines embellish Zembra. And wide bands of color dominate Etolin. All meeting or exceeding Association for Contract Textiles guidelines for colorfastness, breaking strength, and flame resistance, the

Knoll Textiles

I am always excited to see what Knoll Textiles will introduce or revamp from their rich storied archives. I am never disappointed!

Designer Suzanne Tick introduces Fila, a 100% high performance polyester drapery fabric, is the little sister to Suzanne Tick’s Escala. This smaller scale warp knit potentially allows for interesting scale pairings when used together with the original. It comes in 6 colorways and is 118 in. wide.

With her latest collection for Knoll Luxe, Dorothy Cosonas draws inspiration from current fashion with three upholstery fabrics, Arabella, Gramercy, and Vermeer. The collection includes two large scale velvet upholstery fabrics, which offer a modern twist on a traditional concept, as well as a classic Knoll nubby texture.

Inspired by trends on the runway, Arabellais a modern take on a classic plaid. Digitally printed on 100% cotton velvet, it comes in six colorways, including Serenade, a fresh combination of gray and yellow. This fabric is Greenguard certified and is made from 100% cotton. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Gramercy is a large-scale geometric cut velvet that combines a modern pattern with old-world technology. Colors range from classics like gray and camel to fashion-forward green and purple. It is made from 100% cotton and comes in six color ways. This fabric is Greenguard certified.

Included Archival reintroductions is the expansion of Cato, which is celebrating its 50thanniversary. Since its introduction in 1961, Cato has never gone out of production. It was originally hand-woven in Germany in 30 yard runs. In the 70’s, it was turned into machine woven goods in Scotland, where it has been made ever since. Cato has become an iconic design for KnollTextiles, often pictured on classic KnollStudio pieces such as Eero Saarinen’s Womb chair. Over the years KnollTextiles has added and deleted colors; For Cato’s 50thbirthday, Dorothy Cosonas has brought back three colors from the original 60’s archives: natural, yellow and hot pink. This high performance fabric is made of 86% wool and 14% rayon. It exceeds 100,000 double rubs, is now available in 12 colorways.

Still in the cleaning and purging mood so as promised, next up is Mark Hampton, An American Decorator by Duane Hampton. This book starts with a very personal essay about Mark, his life, career and successes by his wife, Duane and follows with a retrospective of his work for some of Americas movers and shakers. The icing on the cake- interspersed in the pages are Mark’s delightful watercolors and gouaches.

Mark Hampton, one of the most famous and admired designers of the 20th century, he has been called ” an icon of American Style.” Hampton epitomizes American success- growing up in small town Indiana and gaining world wide fame. He worked for some of the most venerable design firms in the U.S.- Parish- Hadley, David Hicks, McMillen, Inc. so it’s not surprising that that designers today still look to his work as a guideline and inspiration. Some of my favorites:

So to celebrate a great American Decorator, let’s give away his book.

To enter to win the book, just answer my question below by commenting on the post. You’ll automatically be entered into a drawing for this great book. I’ll draw a winner when I get back from Vegas next week.

Oh yes- watch for posts on KBIS and Vision11 – what’s new, what’s not; my musing and more….it’s Vegas Baby!!!

I think every designer, at some point, has a hard time making up their mind and an even harder time when it’s their own project. I can design all day for someone else, but when it comes to making a decision for my home I sometimes have a mental block. Whether it’s because I am afraid that if I move forward with the window- the perfect fabric, trim or hardware will come along later and I’ll have designer’s remorse or maybe it is too many choices. I am in that dilemma now and it’s time to make a decision and move on. It’s only windows!

So… In the spirit of crowdsourcing, I thought I’d ask you for help.

Here is the room, my inspiration and top three choices. What would you do? Let me know what you think and vote for what you would do. Help me out. If you get inspired shoot me a note in the comments. I’d love it!

The guest room has dark espresso walls, white trim and cream carpet. Light is reflected by a chandelier, mirrored tables and crystal lamps. A upholstered headboard with sexy curves and vermicelli quilted coverlet carries out the Hollywood Regency feel. At the foot of the bed is an upholstered bench. There are two windows in the room that need dressing and I’ll remove the wood blinds for the new treatment.

Shaped Valance – love the curves that mimic headboard, but it’s too basic. I’ll take it up a notch by marrying the shaped valance and the mirrors in the room and do antique mirrored cornices- very Helena Rubenstein. Panels and sheers filter light during the day and give privacy at night. Like the idea of layers.

Finding my tastes changing a bit. I am drawn to graphic repetition; modern looks mixed with classic French design. Wesco’s Crème Brulee in woodland . Metallic and silky cord couched in a vertical stripe 14” apart. JF Fabrics faux bois sheer- Precious. Bench fabric with bird is Pindler and Pindler.

Classic stylings of Italian strung draperies inspired option 2. I’ll hide a roller shade for privacy underneath. High contrast is the theme in the draperies -coming in two punches of color- honeysuckle and orange. I’ll do a box pleated heading, BUT the first pleat space in from the leading edge is pieced and sewn on the reverse revealing the tangerine hue and creating a stripe in 6”.

This is where I began and the simplest option- sheers and panels on decorative hardware mounted at the crown. The sheers are trimmed with espresso velvet ribbon on the leading edge and the treatment is hung from 2 different rods. A small brass rod for the sheers and a fluted pole with brass rings playing off the gold finishes in the room. OR a plexi rod for the sheers and silver washed pole for the panels.

Karim Rashid has partnered with Velux for a new yet- to- be named collection of blackout skylight shades. These are not your everyday drab shades. The collection includes four unique patterns, each in two different colors. Customers can choose from vibrant pink and acid yellow or more subtle designs of black and white. Inspiration from digital technology on the one hand and floral motifs on the other, adds a modern yet poetic look to the collection. The new patterns bring an abstracted ‘digital nature’ into the home. Four of the designs have decorative metallic details creating a vivid texture. The blinds are not only art on the window but the shades in the new line are energy efficient, generating a 33% decrease in heat loss when closed.

“I want people to see a blind not as a genuine standard product but as a small piece of decorated art that adds beauty and even determines the style of the interior decoration.”

Wow that’s music to my ears! The window covering industry needs to hire him as a spokes person.

Running with the “digital” theme the collection seems to have taken, Velux is crowdsourcing the names of each of the patterns. The competition runs online this month and asks anyone to propose a name for the patterns which can be viewed and voted on by others. At the contest’s close, the most highly voted entries will become the official names of each of the blinds.

Teaming up with one of the design world’s most prolific designers demonstrates a new design approach in the VELUX Group.

“Choosing to work with Karim Rashid came from the recognition that if you want to be innovative, you have to experiment and demonstrate courage in the design process. So working together with internationally acknowledged designers like the ‘King of Colors’ represents a new experience at the VELUX Group. Usually our products serve the purpose of being discrete, but the new designs by Karim Rashid attract attention and add another feature besides quality and value for money to our products.”

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, 2011 now! design à vivre designers, show how this pressure can encourage even more precision. Designed to meet present-day needs but to resist the assault of time and fashion, their objects are sustainable by definition and consequently need to be precise. Their designs themselves are part of a long-term industrial process where design, in their opinion, owns the top spot. The importance of draftsmanship seems incongruous in these days of 3D technology. Yet it is natural for Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

Ronan born in 1971 and Erwan born in 1976, have worked together for over 10 years. Their partnership is a permanent dialogue, nourished by their differences and guided by their need for precision and delicacy.

At the Salon du Meuble in 1997, they were noticed by Giulio Cappellini who assigned them with their first industrial design projects. In 2000, Issey Miyake asked them to design a space presenting his new Apoc clothes collection in Paris. Then came the decisive meeting with Rolf Fehlbaum, president of Vitra, which led to the design of a new typology of office systems called Joyn in 2002. They have worked with Magis to design two complete furniture collections: Striped and Steelwood.

Finally, the textile walls North Times and Clouds designed through a partnership with Kvadrat.

In 2010 they presented two separate collections for two new editors: a tableware collection, called Ovale, for Alessi and a bathroom collection for Axor.

UPDATE: Being introduced at M&O next week in the Nanimarquina booth is ‘losanges’ , a new rug collection designed by the Bouroullec brothers.

Intrigued by traditional persian rugs and the ‘kilim savoir-fair’ which the designers consider to be a delicate mix of rusticity and fineness, the ‘losanges’ project is carried out by craftsmen in northern Pakistan who weave the rug’s thirteen colors into a geometrical rhombus shape. ‘losanges’ is crafted by hand, and the afghan wool used to craft it is hand spun, allowing for particular color tones to be highlighted, making each one a unique piece. Can’t wait to see it in person.

For those of you interested in the process; see below.
