Trend Dispatch: Maison and Objet 2012- Colors of the Moment

Walking the aisles and showrooms in Paris for Maison & Objet and Paris Deco Off, I couldn’t help but note several colors that kept popping up everywhere! Put these on your must have list for 2012.

Fool’s Gold

Schumacher's Ripple Effect

This bold citron gold hue with brassy green undertones was all over the place. This is a color that’s hard to put your finger on. I find myself drawn to it and recently when deciding to paint my living room this color, I had a heck of a time getting it just right? This hue definitely evokes emotion- shifting from in-your-face to  moody  and sultry.  We’ve seen it before, but this time it was the center of attention and not an accent; showing up on different surfaces on new product categories, was interesting finishes to almost in some cases looking lit from within. Plus, it was mixed and matched with new colors creating unusual fresh schemes.

Seeing Things- Trompe l’Oeil Looks

I am not one for practical jokes, but as a designer I do love  a good visual trick or two.  That’s what I am seeing lately -trompe l’oeil (French for “deceive the eye”)  looks from fashion to decor that marries whimsy and humor with style and design.

I’m seeing trompe l’oeil looks in :

Walls

Piet Hein Eek’s wallpaper  makes scrap wood gorgeous!

Koziel’s antique shutter wallpaper doubles your fun. This paper gives you pause- is there or isn’t there a window there?

What can a say?- Christain LaCroix for Designers Guild. LOVE.LOVE. LOVE

Need architectural detail? Berard has it.

Windows

I ♥ Bauke Knottnerus’ trompe l’oeil curtains, they can be on a window in a doorway fooling the eye into believing there’s more space thanks to the perspective.

Koziel’s Decorative film provides the view and the ornate ironwork.

Trend Alert: Colorblocking

Loving this season’s hottest trend of bright bold color combos mixed and matched with colorblocking( two groups of colors juxtaposed next to each other without any other color or pattern intervening ). It can make a room, window or piece of furniture look like a piece of modern art. It’s easy.
All you need is some inspiration and a couple of helpful tips:
Don’t know where to start? Find a piece that’s already done for you.

Matisse's MONDRIAN fabric - 100% cotton

Triple Threat. Consider featuring three different shades; or maybe four- any more and dare I say it? CRAZY!

Ptolemy Couch Interiors UK

Stick to the same saturation. Go for colors of the same intensity to make a match and not clash.
Bold combos not your thing? Use the classic high contrast approach of black and white with a punch of color. It’ll look brand new.

Elitis fabric

Place your colors strategically. Remember the principles of design- brights attract; darks recede. Camouflage or flatter the piece you are colorblocking by applying the fundamentals.

Pierre Frey colorblocked linen draperies

From understated to WOW. Liven up neutrals with neon. ( Not to mention this citron seems to be the color of the moment).

Trend Alert#7: What’s Ahead for Upholstery

Textile and leather suppliers showcased their newest looks in early December at Showtime in High Point. This show gives us a sneak peek of key looks we’ll see at the April High Point Market, with upholstery manufacturers shopping Showtime for fabrics.

Key looks and color trends at Showtime included:

1. Teal and burnt orange were strong color contenders, closely followed by apple green and bright lemon.

2. The neutral grays are morphing into driftwood or raffia.

3.Botanicals are back, particularly in silhouetted prints of trees, ferns, or gingko leaves. Figurative florals are also key.

Pierre Frey + Deyrolle

4.Prevalent patterns included paisleys, cabana stripes, suzanis, toiles, lace, and Florentine tiles.

5. Menswear designs inspired leather looks, including a houndstooth pattern on a hair-on-hide.

Kyle Bunting Hair on Hide pillows

6.Crocodile featured strongly on fashion runways this fall, and it’s back in a very big way for leather suppliers.

7.Novelty patterns included folk-art birds, postcards, scientific equations( think Big Bang Theory), china plates, round chickens, and hamsa (a palm-shaped design).

8.In trims, look for tassels to start appearing again, particularly Deco-inspired designs that step away from the traditional shapes.

Les Decouvertes Awards

May I toot my own horn? I am sooo excited to  have just been asked to be a member of the jury for the  Les Découvertes (= your favorite product) Awards at Maison & Objet .  I will sift through the different sectors of the  show, covering every aisle in order to find the best-of-the-best and  pick my favorite product in a specific sector .Les Decouvertes will reward the most impressive new products of the show as discerned by a jury( me!) which is completely composed of bloggers and design columnists.
Watch for my posts from the show and see what I pick. Don’t forget to check out the more real time coverage of Heimtextil and imm cologne as I work my way through the January design shows.
